New function to make searching for lost luggage easier

Apple is making it easier for travellers to find their luggage in the future: a new AirTag function allows passengers to share the location of their suitcase directly with airlines. This should help travellers recover lost luggage more quickly.

After a long flight, you finally arrive at your destination only to discover that your luggage is missing. It's a frustrating situation that many travellers are familiar with. Apple is now looking to put an end to this nightmare.

With the new ‘Share Item Location’ feature in the ‘Find My’ app, users can share the location of their baggage with airlines via a live link. This innovation will be supported by major airlines such as Swiss, United, Lufthansa and British Airways from 2025 and is designed to increase efficiency in baggage tracking.

Apple stated that sharing an AirTag's location with airline staff will expedite the recovery of lost baggage while safeguarding travelers' privacy. The feature can be disabled at any time and will automatically stop after seven days or as soon as the baggage is back in the hands of its owner.

Apple's innovation is part of the iOS 18.2 update and available worldwide in the beta version. With its integration into the SITA baggage tracking system, which is used by over 500 airlines and 2800 airports worldwide, the system is widely established.
