Capri limits tourist groups
The Italian holiday island of Capri is tightening its rules for visitors. Starting next summer, organized tour groups will only be allowed to disembark with a maximum of 40 people. The local council is making this decision in response to the persistently high number of visitors and the increasing strain on infrastructure and the population.
In addition to limiting group size, further measures are coming into effect. Tour guides will no longer be allowed to use loudspeakers for groups of more than 20 people. Instead, wireless headphones must be used to reduce noise and protect the quality of life of the local population.
Guides must also wear a clearly visible badge to ensure they are easily identifiable. Conspicuous aids such as umbrellas or cloths attached to sticks, which are often used to keep groups together, will also be prohibited. At the same time, those responsible for guides will be required to ensure their groups remain together and do not excessively block public paths.
Capri is one of Italy's most famous tourist destinations, attracting enormous numbers of visitors, especially during the summer months. On peak days, up to 50,000 guests arrive on the island – which has only around 13,000 inhabitants.
