China builds the highest bridge in the world
A record-breaking structure is currently under construction in the southern Chinese province of Guizhou: the Huajiang Gorge Bridge, poised to become the highest bridge in the world upon completion. Its deck will soar 625 meters above the valley floor. The massive steel truss suspension bridge will stretch 2,890 meters in length, with a main span of 1,420 meters.
Located in a remote, mountainous region north of the Vietnamese border, the bridge is being built under challenging conditions. Construction began on January 18, 2022, and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2025—an impressively short timeline for such a large-scale project. The Huajiang Gorge, also known as the "Earth Rift," is known for its dramatic elevation changes, adding to the engineering feat's visual and technical impact.
According to state media, the bridge is designed to cut travel time across the gorge from as much as two hours to just one minute. It forms part of a new expressway aimed at boosting economic activity and tourism in the region.
Interesting fact: According to «CNN», about half of the world's 100 highest bridges are located in Guizhou Province . Upon completion, the Huajiang Bridge will surpass the current highest bridge, the Beipanjiang Bridge (565 meters), which is also located in the region.
While the Huajiang Bridge will be the highest in the world, it isn't the largest. That distinction belongs to the Millau Viaduct in France, whose tallest pier stands at 343 meters—taller than the Eiffel Tower. Even so, the Huajiang Bridge is impressive in its own right: its steel girders weigh 22,000 tons, nearly three times as much as the Parisian icon.
