Nilantha's Guesthouse in Sri Lanka

Help people to help themselves! Nilantha's Guesthouse is a sustainable family project at the Red Rock Beach Surf Spot in Sri Lanka.

Nilantha’s Guesthouse is a community capacity building project to help the Uswaththage family. The southern coast of Sri Lanka, where the family lives, was hit particularly hard by the tsunami in 2004. Minou Sikken, the swiss initiator of the project, met the large family on her first trip to Sri Lanka in March 2015. Ever since, she supports them with 10% of her income, clothes, electronic devices and other useful things which she collects in Switzerland.

Nilantha’s will be a low-budget guesthouse for individual travelers who want to relax at the natural and unspoiled Red Rock Beach. The marvelous bay, an insider tip for Reef Surfers, is located in southern Sri Lanka between Weligama and Midigama.

Nilantha’s Guesthouse is designed practically. It will offer three simply furnished double rooms, each with a bathroom and a veranda. In addition, the blueprints show a small rooftop restaurant. There, guests can enjoy the sea view while eating their dishes cooked with local products.

By realizing the Nilantha’s guesthouse project, the Uswaththage family will be supported sustainably because they will become part of the region’s slowly regrowing tourism industry. The project implementation will be supported by the initiator who has experience in hotel industry and gastronomy. The CHF 25’000 needed to cover all project costs will be collected by crowdfunding. With additional CHF 10’000, a second floor could be built.
