Legendary hotel in Las Vegas closes down
Siegfried and Roy kept their tigers there, and volcanic eruptions entertained guests in the evenings. Now, after 34 years, the Mirage in Las Vegas is closing its doors. The 3,000-room resort will cease operations on July 17.
According to «CNN» more than 3,000 Mirage employees will lose their jobs. There is talk of severance pay totalling 80 million dollars (the equivalent of 72 million francs). According to the union representing the employees, those affected will receive 2,000 dollars for each year of employment and will have the opportunity to return when the hotel reopens.
Existing bookings will be cancelled and refunded. Casino chips must also be used at the Mirage by July 14 until this date, but can still be redeemed at neighbouring Treasure Island for a period of 120 days after the resort closes.
The resort will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a hotel tower over 200 metres high in the shape of a guitar. The hotel is likely to be similar to the brand's hotel in Fort Lauderdale.
MGM Resorts bought the Mirage in 2000 from casino mogul Steve Wynn, who had opened the hotel in 1989. In 2022, MGM Resorts sold the hotel to Hard Rock International for more than one billion US dollars.
