Beware the fake traveler scam

The so-called «Stranded Traveller Scam» has prompted a police warning: fraudsters are posing as stranded travelers and using manipulated banking apps to steal cash. Police advise being especially cautious of unsolicited requests for money from strangers.

A particularly insidious scam is currently making headlines again: In the so-called «Stranded Traveller Scam,» perpetrators pose as stranded travelers in acute distress – and deliberately play on the sympathy of passers-by.

Police in Germany are currently warning of a rise in such cases. The scam always follows the same pattern: Under pressure, the fraudsters tell a dramatic story, claiming a stolen wallet and missing identification documents that prevent the victim from boarding their return flight. Many of those approached want to help – and thus become targets.

To obtain cash, the bogus travelers pretend to transfer the borrowed amount immediately via a banking app. Right in front of their victims, they enter the supposed payment and display a deceptively authentic confirmation. In reality, however, these are manipulated apps where the transaction is canceled.

Police strongly advise caution: Anyone suddenly and under time pressure asked for money should be suspicious and under no circumstances hand over any cash. If in doubt, call the police.

At the same time, emergencies can be real. If a person genuinely needs support, their identity should be verifiable – for example, via digital IDs or social media profiles. If a money transfer is arranged nonetheless, only reliable payment services should be used, and cash should only be handed over after confirmed receipt of payment.
