These travel destinations are considered unsafe in 2026

The new Risk Map from Safeture provides an overview of which countries you can travel to with a clear conscience and which destinations you should avoid.

The global security situation remains tense – and has even deteriorated further in many regions. This is shown in the new Risk Map 2026, published by the security company Safeture together with its partner Riskline.

The analysis assesses countries and cities based on various risk factors such as crime, political stability, armed conflict, healthcare, environmental hazards, and travel-friendliness. Color gradations from dark green (negligible risk) to red (critical risk) provide travelers with a quick overview.

Armed conflicts shape several goals

Armed conflicts, insurrections, and militant activities continue to be the primary factors that make countries high-risk areas. According to the Risk Map, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and Pakistan are once again among the most dangerous countries in the world. The reasons include militant groups, border disputes, and weak state institutions.

Countries characterized by civil unrest, political chaos, and widespread crime are also considered particularly unsafe – including:

  • Sudan and South Sudan
  • Ukraine
  • Haiti
  • Venezuela
  • Ecuador
  • Somalia

«Unfortunately, the world has not become safer. New travel risks are emerging in many places, and danger situations are changing very rapidly,» explains Marcel Brandt, Chief Sales Officer of Safeture.

The safest countries in the world

There is, however, also positive news: Numerous travel destinations continue to offer a virtually risk-free environment. These include many countries in Europe as well as stable countries in Oceania, Asia, and North America. The following countries are considered particularly safe:

  • Australia
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Finland
  • Ireland
  • Canada
  • Croatia
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Switzerland
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Czech Republic

In Africa, Morocco, Namibia, and Botswana stand out as safe countries. In Asia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates are among the low-risk travel destinations. North and South America also offer numerous safe regions, including the USA, Costa Rica, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and many Caribbean islands.

The safest cities in 2026

While Europe as a whole is among the safest regions in the world, several countries are showing increasing instability. According to the Risk Map, France, Spain, Sweden, and Great Britain are now classified one risk level higher than they were two years ago. The reasons include political tensions, demonstrations, and weather-related natural disasters.

In addition to country data, the Risk Map also evaluates major cities worldwide. These are the 10 safest cities:

  • Abu Dhabi
  • Bern
  • Montevideo
  • Munich
  • Ottawa
  • Perth
  • Reykjavik
  • Singapore
  • Tokyo
  • Vancouver

These cities impress with low crime rates, stable political conditions, and efficient policing.

The 10 most unsafe cities in 2026

  • Caracas (Venezuela)
  • Dili (East Timor)
  • Goma (DR Congo)
  • Kabul (Afghanistan)
  • Khartoum (Sudan)
  • Mogadishu (Somalia)
  • Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea)
  • Port-au-Prince (Haiti)
  • Quetta (Pakistan)
  • Guatemala City (Guatemala)

They are characterized by political instability, organized crime, and militant groups.

The global situation remains dynamic. Risks have recently changed, for example here:

  • Israel, Lebanon, Iran, the West Bank and Gaza Strip: Increased risk due to the Gaza war; improvement after ceasefires.
  • Martinique: Temporary increase due to protests.
  • New Caledonia: Relaxation after serious unrest.
  • Turks and Caicos Islands: Increased risk due to rising crime.
  • Mali, Nepal and Mozambique: deterioration due to attacks, protests and election unrest.
  • Congo-Brazzaville and Bangladesh: slight stabilization.

The Risk Map 2026 clearly shows: travel remains possible – but careful planning is more important than ever. While some regions are impressively safe, conflicts, humanitarian crises, and state instability are intensifying in others.

For anyone planning a trip abroad in 2026, the Safeture Risk Map 2026 offers valuable guidance – and shows where special caution is required.
