Zurich Airport begins conversion to new security scanners

Renovation work has begun on Zurich Airport’s security checkpoints. The installation of new CT scanners is designed to make security screening faster and more convenient in the future. During the upgrade period, however, passengers may experience longer waiting times.

Things are changing at Zurich Airport's security checkpoint: As the «Tages-Anzeiger» reports, the airport began installing the new CT scanners last week. This upgrade will eliminate one of travelers’ biggest frustrations — having to unpack laptops, tablets, and liquids at security.

The renovation will begin on the lowest floor of the security checkpoint building. «This floor is currently unavailable for screening,» says airport spokeswoman Bettina Kunz. The complete conversion was originally scheduled to be completed by summer 2025. However, due to structural modifications and technical fine-tuning, the schedule was delayed (Travelnews reported).

Kunz emphasizes that all available checkpoints are operational during peak times. Travelers should nevertheless allow sufficient time: «We recommend searching for your flight on the airport website. This will show you the best time to arrive at the airport.» For Schengen flights, a lead time of one and a half to two hours applies, and for intercontinental flights, two to three hours.

On Friday, there were longer waiting times as a result of Storm Benjamin, as many passengers were trying to catch up on their canceled flights. With the switch to the winter flight schedule yesterday (October 26, 2025), airport management hopes that the situation should ease again.
