China Eastern to operate world’s longest flight
Nonstop flights are often described as the «purest form» of aviation—point A to point B without a break. Singapore Airlines has long held the record, linking Singapore and New York in just under 19 hours. Now, a new benchmark is set to emerge: a direct service operating under a single flight number, albeit with a technical stopover.
From December 4, 2025, China Eastern will operate the route between Shanghai and Buenos Aires, spanning almost 19,700 kilometers. A Boeing 777-300ER configured for 316 passengers will serve the flight. Eastbound, the journey is expected to take 25.5 hours, while the return westbound leg may last up to 29 hours due to prevailing headwinds.
The operation poses a significant logistical challenge. The aircraft will pause in Auckland, New Zealand, for refueling and a full crew change. Passengers, however, will remain on board throughout the stop.
The ultra-long journey comes at a price: economy fares will start at around 1,400 Swiss francs, with business class priced just under 5,000. Despite in-flight entertainment, meals, and lie-flat seats in premium cabins, nearly 30 continuous hours of air travel will test even the most seasoned flyers.
Beyond passenger convenience, the route carries strategic weight. China and Argentina maintain strong trade ties, spanning soybeans and beef to technology and consumer goods. With this new service, China Eastern not only expands its network but also seeks to reinforce the growing economic and political partnership between Beijing and Buenos Aires.
