Why do people reserve deck chairs on vacation?
On social media, they spark both laughter and frustration: videos of early risers staking out deck chairs at dawn, draping them with towels or pool gear long before anyone takes the first dip in the water.
But how widespread is this phenomenon really? A recent representative survey commissioned by the review platform Holidaycheck shows that almost 60 percent of respondents have experienced this spectacle themselves while on vacation. Three out of five are annoyed by this behavior, and more than half would like to see clear hotel rules against it.
Fear, adaptation and the struggle for holiday happiness
What motivates people to reserve a spot before breakfast – even though they criticize this behavior in others? Travel psychologist Barbara Horvatits-Ebner says: «Often, the fear of missing out or not fitting in is behind it. Many want to avoid failure – and that provides security.» Territorial behavior also plays a role: Those who have found their favorite spot mark it again the next day – visibly and clearly.
At the same time, the towel helps avoid arguments with other guests. And when many people make reservations, another factor comes into play that should hardly be underestimated: social pressure. «The need to adapt strongly influences behavior,» says Horvatits-Ebner.
Those who participate contrary to their own convictions often experience internal contradictions – so-called cognitive dissonance. This is often subsequently resolved through justifications.
In the end, one thing is clear: the morning deck chair blockade is less a sign of selfishness – but rather a reflection of basic human instincts, social dynamics, and the fear of missing out on holiday happiness.
