Some cities fall short of their social media hype—others exceed all expectations. A new analysis highlights the travel destinations least likely to disappoint in 2025 and reveals where it's worth venturing off the beaten path.

Glossy Instagram photos and rave travel blogs fuel high expectations for the world's metropolises. But what if reality falls short of the digital illusion? What if the long-awaited city trip suddenly loses its magic? Not every popular destination can live up to the hype .

But some destinations fall short. True insider tips that pleasantly surprise and rarely leave travelers disappointed. The luggage storage service Radical Storage analyzed nearly 100,000 Google reviews of the most visited attractions in 100 global cities for the 2025 travel year. The goal was to find out where expectations and experiences diverge most significantly.

The results show that some cities not only met visitors' expectations, but even exceeded them. If you want a worry-free vacation, consider the destinations that stood out in the study for having especially few negative reviews.

Asia's quiet stars convince

Guangzhou, China, is right at the top. Only 0.8 percent of reviews contained critical remarks—a clear sign that the southern Chinese metropolis pleasantly surprises travelers with its modern skyline, diverse cuisine, and cultural depth.

In second place among the positive surprises was Lima, the capital of Peru—an insider tip for anyone seeking authentic experiences and culinary highlights. Also among the top three was Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman, where impressive landscapes, hospitality, and oriental elegance converge.

Two cities share fourth place: Sapporo in Japan, known for its snow festival and the relaxed atmosphere on Hokkaido, and Zhuhai in southern China, which surprises with futuristic architecture, green parks and its proximity to Macau—both with only 2.0 percent of negative comments.

In sixth place is Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital, which turns out to be a charming, uncrowded gem in the Baltics. With only 2.2 percent of negative reviews, it's a real insider tip for culture and architecture enthusiasts.

Santiago in Chile (7th place) delights with spectacular views of the Andes and a vibrant art and culinary scene—hardly a recipe for disappointment (2.3%). Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, shares the spot, enchanting visitors with a medieval city center straight out of a fairytale.

In ninth place is Shenzhen, another Chinese metropolis that has grown from a former fishing village into a high-tech global city—a travel destination that many significantly underestimate.

Three cities share tenth place: Delhi (India), Guilin (China), and Mecca (Saudi Arabia). While Mecca scores well in the study, it isn’t accessible to all travelers due to religious entry restrictions.

So if you want to play it safe, don’t rely solely on glossy images—dare to think outside the box. Beyond the usual overcrowded hotspots, there are destinations that not only live up to expectations—but often exceed them.
