Red zone in Pisa: Police take action against pickpockets
Every year, Pisa attracts millions of tourists who come to see the Leaning Tower and the Piazza dei Miracoli. A major downside of the large crowds of visitors is the prevalence of pickpocketing and other crimes. The area around the train station – Tuscany's second largest after Florence, serving around 20 million travelers annually –is particularly affected.
The authorities have now classified the area around the station as a high-risk zone, with strict measures in place to prevent pickpocketing and other crimes. The new «red zone», which includes Piazza della Stazione and several adjacent streets, has been classified as a high-risk area by the Italian authorities.
Aggressive, threatening, or harassing behavior will be strictly punished with immediate effect. Additionally, police presence will be increased, and soldiers will be deployed to support enforcement efforts. The goal is to curb violence, theft, and drug trafficking in this highly frequented area.
Tourists should be vigilant not only at the station but also in Piazza dei Miracoli. Pickpockets there use tricks such as seemingly harmless questions or accidental collisions to distract their victims and steal valuables.
