Why Peru is shining and Ecuador is stumbling

South America’s diversity and adventure continue to captivate, but the travel industry struggles with trust in certain areas. A survey by Travelnews of Swiss Latin America specialists reveals that Peru benefits from economic growth and stability, while Ecuador faces challenges due to negative press.

South America remains a dream destination for travellers, but the recovery from the Corona crisis is proceeding differently in the countries of the continent. This is particularly evident in the examples of Peru and Ecuador. Both countries have recently been additionally affected by challenges such as political unrest and, in the case of Ecuador, a rising crime rate.

A survey by Travelnews among Swiss Latin America experts reveals that Peru inspires with its economic growth and diversity, while Ecuador continues to struggle to regain the trust of travelers. Two countries, two worlds.

Peru: an insider tip with potential

Peru can do everything», says Gabriela Stauffer, General Manager of Dorado Latin Tours, when asked about the country's strengths. This diverse Andean nation fascinates with its rich culture, impressive landscapes and world-famous cuisine.

From the magic of Machu Picchu and desert adventures to culinary delights such as ceviche and pisco sour, Peru combines tradition, adventure and pleasure like no other country.

The figures show that demand has recovered: tour operators such as Hotelplan Suisse are listing Peru as an insider tip for 2025, and bookings with specialist providers are also increasing significantly.

The legendary Machu Picchu continues to be a major attraction. «The issue of overtourism has been debated repeatedly, but entry has been strictly regulated for years», says Reto Kindlimann, CEO of Brasa Reisen. According to him, visiting remains a remarkable and memorable experience that leaves travelers with lasting impressions.

«Peru is a year-round destination that appeals to a wide audience», explains Marius Lüthi, Co-Product Manager at Latino Travel. At the same time, providers are observing a trend towards individual travel, off the beaten track, as well as an increasing demand for longer stays and country combinations.

Another advantage for Peru is its stabilised political situation, allowing unrestricted travel throughout the country. For Alessandra Rüfenacht, Managing Director of Latin America Tours, one thing is clear: if Edelweiss were to set up new direct flights to South America, «Lima would be at the top of the list of priorities». Such a step could further boost tourism.

Ecuador: the battle for trust

The situation in Ecuador, however, is different. Demand there remains subdued – with one major exception: the Galapagos Islands. This unique archipelago continues to attract visitors.

Conversely the mainland has been hit by negative headlines. Crime, power shortages, forest fires and political unrest shape the perception of many potential travellers. «Ecuador needs a new boost in confidence», says Reto Kindlimann, CEO of Brasa Reisen.

Gabriela Stauffer of Dorado Latin Tours also sees a certain reluctance, although she recognises positive signals: «Bookings have increased, but customers often ask about the political situation,’ she says. Marius Lüthi, Co-Product Manager at Latino Travel adds: ‘The difficult-to-assess political situation is likely to continue to inhibit demand.»

Ecuador's biggest challenge remains to make its potential more visible. With its diverse nature, charming colonial cities such as Quito and Cuenca, and warm hospitality, the country actually has a lot to offer – once travellers' trust returns.
