Which cities will attract the most international travellers in 2024? A current ranking shows surprising frontrunners and well-known classics.

Travelling connects people, cultures and stories - and opens up unique perspectives on the world. In 2024, international tourism experienced a remarkable upswing with 19 per cent more international arrivals. Europe remains the most popular region, followed by Asia-Pacific.

However, travelling is changing: people are increasingly looking for culturally enriching and sustainable experiences off the beaten track. Cities play a central role in this, as they are not only cultural and economic centres, but also hubs of tourism.

The latest ranking from Euromonitor International shows which cities attracted the most people in 2024.

1. Bangkok

Bangkok leads the rankings with 32.4 million international arrivals. This is an increase of 37 per cent compared to last year. The Thai capital captivates with its blend of traditional culture, vibrant nightlife, and first-class cuisine. Thailand's introduction of a 60-day visa-free regime for numerous countries in 2024 in particular made the city even more attractive for travellers.

2. Istanbul

Istanbul has attracted 23 million visitors this year, 14 per cent more than last year. The Turkish metropolis fascinates visitors with its unique blend of history and modernity. From the majestic Bosphorus to impressive sights such as the Hagia Sophia, the city is a melting pot of cultures.

3. London

With 21.7 million international arrivals, a slight increase on the previous year, London remains one of Europe's top destinations. The British capital boasts iconic sights such as the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. There is also a lively cultural scene, ranging from world-famous museums to exciting theatre performances.

4. Hong Kong

Hong Kong has welcomed 20.5 million visitors this year, almost 20 per cent more than in 2023. The city impresses with its skyline, bustling markets and unrivalled mix of East and West. It is not only a shopper's paradise but also boasts cultural highlights, including traditional temples and a thriving modern art scene.

5. Mecca

With 19.3 million international arrivals - an increase of 20 per cent compared to the previous year - Mecca remains a central place of faith. The annual Hajj pilgrimage attracts millions of people and shapes the city's identity. However, Mecca's importance as a tourist destination is also growing outside of the pilgrimage season.

6. Antalya

The Turkish tourist stronghold of Antalya has also attracted 19.3 million travellers this year. This represents an increase of 17 per cent compared to last year. The Turkish Riviera offers a perfect mix of beach holidays and cultural excursions, including ancient ruins and lively bazaars.

7. Dubai

With 18.2 million visitors, eight per cent more than last year, Dubai remains synonymous with luxury travel. Whether it's the impressive skyscrapers, luxurious shopping centres or futuristic projects such as the artificial island of Palm Jumeirah - Dubai continues to set new standards.

8. Macau

Macau on the south coast of China, primarily known for its casinos, welcomed 18 million visitors this year—an increase of 26 per cent compared to last year. The city also offers a special attraction outside of gambling, with its Portuguese colonial heritage and unique cuisine.

9. Paris

With 17.4 million international arrivals, a slight increase compared to the previous year, Paris maintains its status as a romantic and cultural centre. The city impressed visitors with events such as the 2024 Summer Olympics, which set new attendance records. Its iconic sights such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum remain unrivalled.

10. Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is rapidly growing in popularity with tourists, recording 16.5 million visitors – a huge increase of 73 per cent compared to the previous year. The Petronas Towers, multicultural markets and delicious street food specialities make the Malaysian capital a must-see for travellers in Asia.
